MAN TGS with EMPL Bison Recovery Body
Presented here is the 1:50th scale MAN TGS
8x4 truck chassis with EMPL Bison recovery body from Conrad. The paint
finish is excellent as usual with fine printing throughout the model
featuring the Eichenseher company graphics.
Looking at the underside of
the mode, the front axles have working steering and are fitted with
accurately moulded rubber tyres which have a detailed road tread pattern
along with chromed wheel hubs.
The rear axles are mounted to
the chassis with simulated and non-functional suspension which keep the
axles rigid. A drive shaft is connected between the rear axle hubs and
to the front transmission block.
A nice touch on the model are
the storage brackets integrated to the chassis where the plastic
brackets can be stored when not fitted to the recovery arm (pictured
right).

The front body panel has integrated
driving lights with clear plastic lenses along with an inset textured
plastic grill which is visible through the open areas of the panel.
Above this is the familiar black panel with chromed MAN name & logo.
Moving to the sides of the cab, the doors have handle detail cast into
the surface with ridged side panels, small side windows and silver
highlighted access steps leading up to the cab.
The sun visor fitted above the windscreen
has white printing of the Eichenseher company name and the interior has
been replicated with the moulded dashboard and seats clearly visible
through the windscreen which has raised windscreen wipers highlighted
with black paint. The front of the roof panel has a hole where the
flexible plastic aerial need fitting while holes in the cab
frame allow the rear view
mirrors to be easily fitted.
The cab tilts forward to uncover the metal
engine block mounted to the chassis and the large chromed exhaust stack
has a dimpled texture simulating the cooling holes of the safety
jacket. While the detail within the engine bay is sparce, there is
enough to warrant the tilting cab and it will just about remain in the
tilted position.
Conrad have already produced a number of
trucks with the Brechtel recovery body and the EMPL Bison is certainly
equally well engineered and has a little more functionality. Starting at
the rear, the model features pull down plastic stabilisers with
pivoting pads offering stability and a good footing during recovery
operations. The range of extension allows the rear of the chassis to
lift off the ground
The main recovery boom is
hinged and can be raised/lowered with stiff hydraulics allowing the boom
to remain in the chosen position and the range of movement is very
good.
|
The boom can be raised up
high, allowing the pivoting pintle hitch bracket to be installed and
used for towbar recovery operations which is a nice addition on the
model and it is a shame Conrad did not supply a towbar as an accessory.
|
Two winches are fixed to the
back of the boom and both are functional, with hooks fitted to rotating
sockets at the tip. There is also a spare wheel mounted to the boom and
two protective frames with simulated roller bars to keep the cables in
line.
Another nice feature
implemented on the model is the telescopic floodlight holder, topped
with an amber beacon and silver painted lenses located on all four
corners.
|
The three section telescoping boom allows
for the recovery of different sized vehicles and two plastic end
sections slide onto the pivoting metal bracket. The end sections can be
adjusted on the full sized truck to fit different tyre dimensions and
this detail has been captured in the castings, although not
functionally.
The contours of the rear body panels have
been cast well with angled edges and silver grab rails running along
the edges on both sides. The rear panels have access steps integrated
into the design with tinted plastic lenses fitted to the light housings
on each side. The printing along the sides of the model deserves
a mention as there are a number of small details including the small
orange rectangles and crisp graphics of the Eichenseher company. Once
again, Conrad have produced a very interesting replica that is
predominantly metal and has a nice heavy feel to it.
