Putzmeister M42-5 RZ Concrete Pump
Presented here is the 1:50th scale
Putzmeister M42-5 RZ 4-axle concrete pump from Conrad. With the news
that Sany are purchasing the Putzmeister company, it will be interesting
to see what happens with the range of models that have been produced by
Conrad. The latest offering is decorated in the updated Putzmeister
colour scheme and looks very striking, based on a MAN TGS 4-axle
chassis.
The four outriggers are
functional, with the rear arms pivoting out while the front arms consist
of double telescoping sections which extend out to form an X pattern.
One nice feature of the rear
jacks are the integrated pins which allow the floor mats to be attached
to the model during transport (as shown right).
Each of the jack legs can be
lowered by rotating the plastic foot and they can take the weight of the
model, allowing the wheels to be raised off the ground.

The body contours and printing have been
applied very well, with the crisp white pin line and grey colours
contrasting well with the yellow base colour.
The quality of printing is also evident on
the boom sections, where the elephant design is located. This has been
applied to the different boom sections so that, once the boom is folded
into the transport position, the full design on each boom section lines
up (as pictured below)
The concrete pumping cylinders are located
at the heart of the chassis along with re-enforcing bars to the main
body casting along with the concrete supply pipe leading up to the
turntable assembly. There are some nice details on the model, like the
cooling fan housings integrated into the rear outrigger arms, along with
the silver access platform, complete with metal handrails.
The rear hopper features an opening cover
revealing the grill bars within. Behind this, the 800 litre water tank
is modelled along with the access steps integrated into the chassis on
both sides leading up to the platforms, again fitted with scaled grab
rails. Different pump options are available on the full sized machine,
ranging from the BSF14H to the BSF16H LS to achieve a rate of between
140 and 160 cubic metres of material per hour.
The 5 arm roll-Z-folding (RZ) boom has
been captured very well, with all the delicate linkages replicated and
functioning to match the range of movement on the full sized machine.
The hydraulic cylinders are a very tight fit and some effort is required
to fully extend some of them. This does ensure that the model remains
in the chosen position and, on the sample reviewed here, the boom does
not move over time. The boom can be rotated through 360 degrees and all
the pipe detailing has been added to the boom sections, leading to the
rubber hose at the tip.
The MAN TGS cab requires the rear view
mirrors and roof aerial to be fitted. The interior has been modelled and
is visible through the large front windscreen. The front pair of axles
have functioning linked steering which achieves a reasonable range of
movement with the silver wheel hubs fitted with rubber tyres that have a
moulded road tread pattern.
This model carries a Z in the product
code, signifying that it is one of a new range of simplified models from
Conrad. At first glance, the model looks as highly detailed as every
other model the company produce, however, on closer inspection, things
like the tilting cabin, and floating suspension of the axles found on
other Canrad releases have been changed to reduce the complexity, and
therefore the overall cost of the model. For me, this is a welcome move
from Conrad and does not detract from the overall presentation of the
model.
